Membership Committee

  • It’s time for Steering Committee elections. We’ll need to elect: A new president or 2 co-presidents; a new Treasurer, 1 new Ops person; 1 new Membership person; 1 or 2 Events people; and a new BQLT Rep. Let’s nominate people and vote on the incoming Steering Committee, so new folks are ready to go next Spring.

  • If you bought something, give receipts to Robert M. for reimbursement! NOTES: Robert successfully  moved our account to Carver Bank, so that we can now access money and hand off Treasurer responsibilities. All is required is to provide proof via our agenda that a new person has been elected. Robert is still resolving PayPal issues to this account.


Events Committee Update

  • The Harvest Fest was a hit! We raised $1,000 from the raffle and sales. NOTES: November 2nd is big BQLT Harvest Fest Event.

Events Committee Update

  • Harvest Fest is scheduled for Saturday, September 28th. All hands needed for our annual fundraising event! We’ll need as many volunteers as possible, please sign up; all get a workday credit. Flexible hours—early & late shifts available
  • Raffle tickets are available now $1 per ticket, see Alisha at the meeting or workday. If you can help sell raffle tickets in advance—let us know
    A book & bake sale in the front, county fair style competitions, and much more. Who can bake something? Please sign up & invite friends, neighbors, family
  • Go thru your shelves now and bring books for Harvest Fest! Extras to NYPL.
  • Heather and Radie, let’s check the bin in compost toilet for supplies for our Kids Activity for the workday. Who else can help with this?
  • “State Fair” contest: blue ribbons for preserves, produce and pickles, baked goods using 1 ingredient from the garden. Please participate! We’ve got some great judges. Judging is at 12:30pm, will move baked goods out front to sell after NOTES: Judges include Ben from Brooklyn Grange, Sawdayah from BQLT, Suzanne Debrango from Block Association, and Sen. Velmanette Montgomery
  • We’ll have a Sept 21 Workday BBQ with roasted corn and BBQ chicken–bring anything else you’d like grilled. Also, Winnie and Tara will set up a ‘smoker’ grill to smoke fish under cherry and hickory chips. Anyone want to smoke anything?
  • NOTES: Alisha putting fliers in Compost Toilet for people to hang up, she also sent email version for people to post on their social media. Please put up fliers around neighborhood, need someone to pass out small fliers at Saturday Farmer’s Market, and to chalk it up (let’s do this on Sept 21st as well). Josh suggests putting flier at gate of Pratt University. There will also be face painting, Eric will donate a tablecloth, paper plates and cups

NOTES: Frank M., Mike M., and Winnie M planning an October 19th Workday Cooking Demonstration, the results of which will then become lunch. Community is welcome.

Get ready for Hollenback’s 2019 Harvest Festival!

Hollenback Community Garden’s annual fundraising event, Harvest Festival, takes place on Saturday, September 28, from 11am to 3pm. Meet the gardeners and take a tour, enjoy pizza from the grill, shop in the pop-up shop, and listen to live music by the Clinton Hillbillies!

FOOD

Pizza – We’ll be selling pizza slices made on the grill, with toppings, including herbs from the garden

POP-UP SHOP

New & Used Books (Donated by garden members)—including many NEW Releases!
Baked Goods (Baked by garden members)
Garden-Sourced Goods—Potted Succulents, Smudge Sticks, Seed Packets

RAFFLE

Guests can enter to win prizes from a variety of businesses, including Olea, La Rina Pastificio e Vino, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Alamo Drafthouse, Shake Shack, Sprout Home, Oslo Coffee, and more! Raffle tickets are $1 each, and winners do not need to be present to win. Raffle takes place at 2:30pm.

MUSIC

Kick back and enjoy live music by the Clinton Hillbillies! Music starts at 1:30pm.

KIDS ACTIVITIES

Free face painting and crafts! Kids of all ages can decorate flowerpots and make a houseplant to take home.

DAFFODIL GIVEAWAY

Take some daffodil bulbs with you to plant in your neighborhood, and help beautify your block! Bulbs are courtesy of the New Yorkers for Parks Daffodil Project.

CONTEST

Hollenback members will compete for Best Produce (tomatoes and more!), Best Preserves (jams, sauces, pickles!), and a Bake-Off. All goods must include at least 1 ingredient from the garden. The contest is limited to members and apprentices of Hollenback Community Garden. Judging takes place at 12:30pm.

    • Chop up wood in back for burn pile

  • Home Depot grant for grape arbor. Should we move forward with this? NOTES: Members say it’s a big project for this late in the season—table it for next season? Talk to barak with questions or ideas.
  • How did the Aug. 10th reading day at the public library go? NOTES: There was a huge crowd, Deema, Sara and Danielle did Garden Story Time, read books on bees and gardesn, planted pots and celebrated the 50th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Library wants to team up with garden again!

  • Communication: Would we like to have a Hollenback Message Board? NOTES: Members are amenable to trying a message board. Use first name, last initial, info will go out for swaps. Yoni offered to make message board for us.

Saturday Storytime – Hollenback Garden presents Eric Carle’s “The Hungry Caterpillar”

Celebrate Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar with the gardeners from Washington Avenue’s Hollenback Community Garden:

  • Listen to a read-aloud of Very Hungry Caterpillar and other garden-themed picture books.
  • Learn about the Hungry Caterpillar rain collector at the garden.
  • Decorate flower pots and plant flower seeds.
  • If weather permits, story and activities will take place next to the Clinton Hill Library’s own flower garden. Participants will be invited to a tour of the Hollenback Garden located down the block to see the rain collector.

Sat, Aug 10 2019  from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Clinton Hill Library.

·       What’s growing in your plot that you didn’t plant (volunteers)? NOTES: People say horseradish, cherry tomatoes, wineberry, ground cherries, everyone says cilantro and dill sprouted where they didn’t plant it. Sara says Black Swallowtail butterflies will eat dill and cilantro, and we should let them.

o   Clean compost toilet & move cone: check transformer re. fan. NOTES: Barak checked electricity with Maria’s fiancé, says the compost toilet is broken. We will need to get professional help to fix it. Check with Claire or former president Mark. A about who installed toilet and how to fix.
o   Open Hours sign for Front Gate: 10-6? 12-6? 12-4? What works? NOTES: Danielle says weekend sign-up going okay via a Wednesday email with an Excel doc, but mostly ppl signing up for 12-4. We’ll wait a few months to see what consistent coverage is before making front gate sign. Deema suggests Danielle send follow-up email highlighting open slots.
o   Watering – hose, barrels, watering cans, mosquito control: NOTES: Sara going to switch to all-white hoses for potable source of water, also going to purchase a new hose caddy. Sara says drain water from hose after use.
o   Who’s interested in cleaning Caterpillar and pix for library gift? NOTES: Heather, Raidy and Danielle interested in painting Caterpillar. Deema, Sara and Danielle interested in presenting book and doing reading at Clinton Hill Public Library-we’ll contact Librarian Tracey Mantrone.
o   Apprentices, what support do you need for The Farm? NOTES: Touch base with Emily on what help needed. Alisha says pick peppers or new ones won’t grow. Time to harvest greens.
o   Accessibility – talk to Sara if interested
·       Home Depot grant for grape arbor. Should we move forward with this?
·       Trash pickup is MWF, so we curb it on Sun and Tues, plus recycling and brown bins on Thursday. Thursday is now written on the brown bins, to remind you. 
·       Suggestion to donate proceeds from last workday to Clinton Hill Public Library, in the form of several copies of The Hungry Caterpillar. OK?
·       We really need a bin of sawdust. Can anyone get this for us? NOTES: Check with nearby Socks and Co. to donate this sawdust. Sara and Robert to do.

Need volunteers to bake or provide dips/spreads for sandwiches, snacks, tea NOTES: Sara to bring cashew cheese, Winnie to bring Watermelon Mint tea, others please bring crudites, sandwich toppings, or teas.
·       Summer Soiree changed: Date TBD, sometime in August.
·       Harvest Fest is scheduled for Saturday, September 28th. All hands needed for our annual fundraising event! We’ll need as many volunteers as possible and will send out a sign-up for specific tasks closer to the date. All workers get a workday credit. There will be a raffle, book & bake sale in the front, county fair style competitions, and much more. All ideas welcome! NOTES: Start to reach out to local businesses to donate raffle prizes, send suggestions to Alisha.

·       The hose is fixed so water stays ON all season. Just lift the lever at the spigot and lower it when you’re done. Don’t use the key anymore–it strips the spigots. Also, Sara says it’s best to coil up the hose after use so it won’t get hot.

Membership Committee
• Have you read the bylaws and signed that you will abide by them? Who still needs a key?
• Membership requirements are: Bylaws/Dues/ 3 Meetings/ 3 Workdays/ 4 Open Hour sessions
• How about this new Open Hours plan? We’ll focus on getting coverage for posted hours Sat-Sun 12-6 p.m.; in addition, all other 2-hour sessions will also be honored. For this to work, people need to sign up for these weekend shifts. NOTES: We voted unanimously to adopt this new Open Hours policy. Rose made an online sign-in, and Danielle F. will use whiteboard calendar to help gardeners fill weekend slots. But to get credit, you MUST sign into the book. Also, Shana said only 2 Open Hours workers can get credit per session, per the bylaws. Rose said she’ll be flexible in the unlikely event multiple gardeners show up for the same Open Hours shift.

• Plant your plot by June 15th, or forfeit it. You’re welcome to use the seeds available on the compost toilet shelves.

NOTES: We’ll be holding a July 12th Full Moon Soiree Potluck in the evening. Alisha also decided to hold Harvest Fest on the Oct. 19 Workday. GreenThumb Harvest Fest is scheduled for Sept. 28th, not in our garden, however.

Operations Committee Update:

  • Goals include: fixing the compost toilet, replacing old wood on garden beds, repainting rainwater harvester, plot signs, grapevine trellis plans, starting seedlings, herb & shade gardens We got wood from Green Thumb, but no soil. B will investigate buying 10 bags. Grant from Home Depot for Trellis Design. We need to assess tree branches weighing on Back Shed roof, and saw them. We need to cut down the dead magnolia tree in the front. We need to make signs for trash removal, Open Hours, Workdays
  • Plant your plot by June 15th, or forfeit it. You’re welcome to use the seeds available. Also there may be leftover plants from BBG. Please don’t use the ones on the table—they are earmarked for Apprentice plot (E is managing), shade (J is managing), and herb gardens (S is redesigning)
  • Trash is MWF, so we curb it on Sun and Tues, plus recycling and brown bins on Thursday We will scale back to one brown bin and one trash bin outside
  • Everyone charge up your power tools for Saturday’s workday; we’ll rebuild beds! Let us consider purchasing some cordless power tools with our funds

 

Membership Committee

  • Have you read the bylaws and signed that you will abide by them?
  • Membership requirements are: Bylaws/Dues/ 3 Meetings/ 3 Workdays/ 4 Open Hour sessions You can include any additional educational and learning workshops you hear about, as long as you report back to the group for credit
  • Open Hours are:  Mon 10-12/4-6; Tues 10-12/4-6; Wed 12-2/4-6; Thurs 6-8; Fri 4-6; Sat-Sun 10-12/12-2/2-4  Try and do one per month. Open gate, greet guests, take out trash, clean up. Danielle F will organize push to make sure Weekends are covered with open hours. Let’s reach out to kid’s groups for tours
  • New members with 2 meetings and 1 workday get a key. Explain rules to being in garden: keep gate open, be respectful to neighbors, welcome visitors.

Treasurer:

  • Pay your dues, on a sliding scale from $10-50, by June 15th.

Events Committee Update

  • We hold educational talks each workday; the next one is on Blueberries with Jane
  • If you have a private event in the garden, let everyone know about it via our Listserve email hollenback_garden@lists.riseup.net, and clean up your mess! Be respectful of neighbors!
  • Bring baked goods for June 15th’s Book and Bake Sale, in tandem with BPL—reach out to Vicky or Alisha to let us know what you can bring
  • July 20 is Open Garden Day; Tea Party and Free Meditation Class by Danielle
  • We’ll do a BBQ at the end of today’s workday, and most other workdays.
  • May 25th BBQ will be a Potluck; everyone is welcome to bring something! Gardeners want to do trainings on how to run kids’ tours
  • Also, Danielle F. does free Stoop Meditation each Thursday at 7:30 a.m. across the street from the garden. All are welcome to join.
