! * March 13, 2007 Hollenback Community Garden Minutes 2007 is here! The garden is open! (Or will be soon!) REMINDER: THE FIRST WORK DAY IS SATURDAY, APRIL 14TH STARTING AT 11A.M. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED! Composting Toilet Update: Our composting toilet is on hold with the city right now. So, in the interim, we’re going to have to be patient and plan for when we will finally be able to install it and free ourselves of the chemical toilet we currently use. The composting toilet will be awesome!!! WHOO HOO! In anticipation of its arrival, we’re going to have to do a bit of rearranging of some of the garden. There was a proposal to do the following: – Re-possess Roma’s plots (giving her nicer plots elsewhere). Move the water tank further toward the back of the garden. Put the composting toilet essentially where the water tank is now. The proposal passed. +++++ Working with P.S. 11 The garden was very excited about the prospect of working with PS11. More discussion is needed on how this will take shape, particularly with regards to keeping kids interested in the garden and dealing with their extended summer vacation. Some things to think about: What does the garden have to teach the children? (And teach them well…let them…oh, I’ll stop) Who is responsible for them? Do we want to give the school a bed to work with? What happens after June? ++++++ Food Waste Last season in the garden was very successful, especially in terms of food production. There were times, especially in August where we were producing more food than we were able to eat. We are currently looking at was of being more responsible about our potential in terms of food security , namely donating it to a local business/soup kitchen/other for their use. More discussion will be had at our next meeting. ++++++ We received $500 from the Independence Community Foundation. It will be used to build up the beds in the front of the fence. ++++++ R.I.P. Diseased Peach Tree. How we loved you so! ++++++ As of now, all of our new spaces have been taken. This includes a new space for Roma, a new space for Alice, and a new space for Hannah. ++++++ New Meeting Time To make sure that we have better attendance at our regularly scheduled monthly meetings, the garden decided to start an alternating meeting schedule system. The schedule is as follows: Thursday, April 19th – 7p.m. (TBD) Saturday, May 19th – 10:30a.m. (Garden) Thursday, June 21st – 7p.m. (TBD) Saturday, July 21st – 10:30a.m. (Garden) Thursday, August 23rd – 7p.m. (TBD) Saturday, September 22nd – 10:30a.m. (Garden) Now you can plan ahead! +++++++ Looking forward to seeing you all in the garden! ! * June 23rd Meeting Notes Dearest Gardeners: My deepest apologies for the prolonged delay in getting out the notes from the last garden meeting. Itdoes not mean that I love you any less as gardeners, simply that my secretarial skills are lacking. First and foremost, Hollenback Community Garden remains the top garden in the universe (as well as the underverse, the monoverse, and the otherverse). Congratulations. Updates: Sarah P. went to the BQLT Operations Committee Meeting. – They are discussing coming up with a systematic method with the BQLT to test the soil in all 34 member gardens. They also discussed operations stuff for the land trust and seem to be formulating a way to make the gardens financially independent. She will report back as to how both of these progress. People at BQLT know our garden and are impressed that we can get such big work crews together. I am too. Make Music New York! – Gardener Allen was our point person and mastermind behind Hollenback’s part in New York’s first Make Music New York Festival. We hosted I-Crisis, and in keeping with most of our musical events, it poured rain. However, not before I-Crisis embodied rock and roll, kicking out three jams on electrified instruments in a lightning storm. There was a great opening poet, and Allen set the mood spinning some soul classics on 45 (Say Allen, can I borrow a copy of your “Hey Soul Classics”?). Thanks to Allen for his stewardship, to Pete for his grillmanship and to everyone who came out. Children at Hollenback – School children from P.S.11 was treated to narrated tours of the garden at the hands of Mark and Hannah (and one day with Sarah’s mom). There were two days of tours given to classes ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade – about 10 classes in all. Each class did something slightly different, but the tours mostly revolved around a sensory exploration of the garden. The students and the teachers and the gardeners all had a great time, and Mark now has children screaming “Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, Miiiiiiisssssterrrrrrrrrrrrr Maaaaaaaaaaark!” everywhere he goes. Our Neighbor and Our Compost: – At the previous meeting we discussed complaints lodged with the Washington Avenue Block Association by our new neighbor, Kathleen. Kathleen is the recent owner of the carriage house on Waverly, right behind the garden, and more specifically, the compost. After our last meeting, Mark met with Kathleen. In our ongoing attempts to mitigate the problems arising (ahem) from the compost pile in the back of the garden, in an effort to work with our new neighbor, and (perhaps most importantly) to maximize our accessible common space, the garden voted to move the working compost piles to the center of the garden behind the apple tree. The workdays for doing this were scheduled for the following Tuesday and Thursday nights. They were successful. Go look at how much space there is in the back of the garden. As we move forward, we’re hoping to find a balance that makes our neighbor content, continue to provide an alternative process for community food waste, let’s the garden maximize its community open space, and enables us to reap the benefits of our legendary compost. Food Donations: – As a reminder, we have discussed combining the contributions of any willing gardeners who wanted to donate extra food to a soup kitchen or food pantry. If any interested gardeners know they will be out of town for any length of time this summer, let Mark know if you want to donate some food during any time you may be away from the city. Budget Report: Pirate Andy reported that we’ve still got some money in the bank after a few outlays for our recent composting toilet and water tank projects. Mostly, though, PLEASE PAY YOUR DUES. It’s only $10/summer. Pure, unadulterated happiness is cheap at Hollenback. Our First Event – Though Mark and Cara will be out of town, it was suggested that July 21st be our first community event of the summer. The idea of a movie night was proposed. The idea was to make sure we are not letting our amazing, but strenuous, construction tasks keep us from having lively community events. It seemed unlikely that anyone would step forward to spearhead this event, but from the ashes there has arisen… Allen Thayer. We thank him beforehand for volunteering to coordinate our group efforts to make this a wonderful event. So stay tuned for more about the group effort he will need from us. ! **August 23rd, 2007 Meeting Minutes** Hello Gardeners, We had a great meeting Thursday night in the garden. In attendance were 16 gardeners ; Mark, Cara, Emerson, Suzanne, Sarah, Kirk, Lorne, Marisa, Michael, Nicole C., Gabe, Stephanie, Charlie, Mei, Ingrid and Annabelle. Much was discussed and much was planned. After the slow down that is the month of August, we will be ending with a bang. Here is a list of upcoming events and workdays that the garden will be hosting in Sept: Thurs 9/6: Film screening of “Yoga, Inc.”, time TBA – Hollenback will be hosting this screening of a documentary by a local fim maker, John Philps. This description was found on the Canadian International Documentary Festival website “Filmmaker John Philps considers the misappropriations of a tradition-cum-trend by consulting with yoga competition winners, studio owners, purist practitioners and anti-yoga entrepreneurs. To further inform his musings, he attempts to track down guru Bikram Choudhary, “the bad boy of yoga” famous for his “hot” style of yoga and infamous for suing yogi instructors who teach his trademarked postures without permission. Yoga, Inc., which promises to fascinate yoga enthusiasts and cynics alike, is an entertaining, insightful and topical anthropological examination of what happens when karma and capitalism collide.” Sat 9/8 BQLT Garden Tour by bike or van -the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust (of which we are a part) will be hosting a tour of 12 BQLT gardens in Brooklyn. Our very own Sarah Pakora will be leading the bike tour and attached is the flier for the event. Visitors will be coming to Hollenback around 1:15 pm and it would be great for Hollenbackers (who are not going on the tour) to be there to welcome them and serve drinks/snacks. We are all the hosts of Hollenback! If you’d like to bake something or provide drinks, please e-mail Nicole Cordier at nicolecordier@gmail. Please clean up your plots so that we can really show off how amazing Hollenback is! Sun 9/9 Rainwater Harvester and Weeding Workday – It’s time to get the rainwater harvester back up and running! We’ve now got the fittings and pipe to do it, and it’s time to cut and put it all together. Charlie will be organizing this project and will need one volunteer an hour from 11:00-5:00. Please sign up for a shift from 11-12, 12-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 or 4-5. – At the same time, Mark and Cara will be running a weeding clean-up effort in the garden to clear out common areas, pathways and overwhelmed plots. You only need to commit to a 2 hour shift, so let me know if you’d like to sign up for a shift from 11-1, 1-3 or 3-5. Let’s get this garden looking sharp! If you’ve been wondering what’s a weed and what’s a valuable plant, this is the time to learn. Sat 9/29 Monthly meeting 10:30-12:00 & Triple Threat: Sidewalk Sale, BBQ, Movienight (12 until ?) – Rejoice! It is time for the 3rd annual Hollenback Triple Threat. This is the main fundrasing event of the year for the garden, and we are excited! A last hurrah for the summer, we pack everything into one joyous occasion. More information will go out later, but we do know that Nicole C. will be organizing the Sidewalk Sale (Thank You!), Suzanne will be organizing the BBQ (Thank You!) and, we hope, Pete and Allen will be lending their expertise to the Movie set up. What we need from everyone in the garden is: 1) to help set up 2) to bring stuff for the yardsale, 3) to prepare/bring food for the BBQ. Save this Date and invite the people you love! We really want to push advertising this event, and that begins with inviting your friends, family and co-workers. Other items discussed at the meeting were: T-Shirts: It was decided that the garden is in favor of getting t-shirts for fundraising purposes. This means that gardeners would be expected to pay for their own t-shirts and to sell to or buy them for friends. There is an interest in using free trade t-shirts, even though they are more expensive than sweat shop t-shirts. Sarah Pokora will take design ideas discussed at the meeting and make several mock-ups for us to consider at our next meeting on Sept 29th. If you have ideas, you should contact Sarah. We are aiming to have these t-shirts for the 2008 growing season. There was a question as to how we would pay for the initial order of t-shirts. 100 t-shirts will cost us from $850-900. It was proposed that we revisit this question after the Triple Threat. We may possibly use money raised at the Triple Threat Fundraiser to pay for the initial t-shirt order, so we do need to bring in some money with that Triple Threat! There was consensus that the t-shirt should be edgy and hip, to broaden potential interest. We discussed where we might sell the t-shirts (on workdays, at events, and maybe looking into if we could sell it in supportive local businesses like, Habana Outpost, Olivino, Sister’s Hardware). We also talked about possibly getting a silkscreen made and printing the shirts ourselves, as well as looking into the Queens T-Shirt Company (which Emerson has dealt with) and the silkscreen place on Fulton, next to the huge laundromat. Composting Toilet: The last major step in getting the toilet up and running is to install the solar panel and attach it to the fan which will circulate air through the composting chamber. Currently negotiations are going on with Don Fohr, our neighbor, to see if we can put the solar panel on his roof. Lorne also volunteered to bake cookies as a thank you gift to send to Battery Park City (who sold us the toilet and helped us at the pick up site) and Park Ave Supply Store (who delivered this beast for free!) Mark will be circulating thank you cards for us all to sign, as well. Membership Policy Committee: Nicole Cordier volunteered to join Cara, Mark, Maggie, Gabe and Frank on this committee. We will be discussing policy regarding membership rights and responsibilities. If you are interested in joining, please e-mail or call Maggie.
