YEAH!  We’re so excited that you’re interested in joining the garden!

Our official seasons begin in March and ends in late October or early November. Everyone is welcome to join.  We have one meeting and one workday each month. To join, you will need to attend a meeting or workday in the first part of the season, up to and including the June meeting and workday.

If you are interested, send us an e-mail at hollenbackcommunitygarden@gmail.com so we can add you to the e-mail list, which we use to send out important information about meetings, workdays, and plot distribution.

Apprenticing

All garden members are required to apprentice for one year before you enter the lottery for a new plot. Sometimes there are plots for apprentices to work, sometimes not. If not, people usually are happy to share their plots with eager and interested apprentices.

Apprenticing involves paying dues (a sliding scale of $10-50), coming to 4 workdays, 4 meetings and 4 two-hour open hours shifts during your first season.  If you do all of those fun things in your first year, then you’re eligible for a permanent plot the next year (if some open up).

We would love to have you in the garden as an Apprentice.  You’ll be able to tend the common areas and trees, build and turn compost, weed, prune, build beds, help with events and enjoy the garden on your own time.

Earning a Plot

There is tremendous interest in Hollenback but limited space. In any given year there may be 3-4 plots to distribute to qualified members, or there may be none.

Click here for more information about our By Laws and Membership Rules.

Keys

If you decide to join as an Apprentice, you will receive a key after coming to 2 meetings and 1 workday.

Workdays

Wear clothes you can get dirty and be prepared to weed, prune, build, hammer, saw, paint, shovel and get dirty.  We provide tools, but it’s a good idea to bring a pair of gardening gloves and a pair of hand pruners (if you have them).  Be prepared to stay at least 3-4 hours, though you’re welcome to stay all day.

Other Gardens

If you are interested in getting hooked up with another community garden where you are more likely to get your own plot, please contact Green Guerillas: https://www.facebook.com/greenguerillas. They work with at-risk and quiet gardens to get more support and energy into those green spaces.
